Reflections on Developing a STEM Game and Building Design Skills at the Academy

During my time working at the academy, I was tasked to design an in-car gaming experience that taught children about STEM, which was achieved through our design of a mobile game that transformed core coding principles into gameplay mechanics. I learned a lot from my time at the academy, as I was pushed to broaden my skill set as a designer, learning new skills such as 3D modeling, 3D animation and 360 video production. As well as developing some soft skills such as communication and project management during the design process. But if I had to say one thing that has left a major impact on me as a designer from this experience it would be the advice I received about attributing my success as a designer.

Initially, working in the academy, I felt extremely intimidated working along with industry professionals with experience and impressive accomplishments. But a member of the team reassured me that my journey as a designer is that of my own and that I should attribute my success as a designer to my growth in skills and drive to push the industry. One of the main challenges during this internship was working with designers and stakeholders in a professional setting, which tested my communication skills as a designer. By taking the time to explain myself more clearly and setting clear project boundaries, I ultimately strived within the project. My time at the academy has pushed me so much as a designer and ultimately reignited my passion for design to become a more professional designer within the industry.
