My Journey so Far
My name is James Dwyer. I am an industrial designer based in Brisbane, with a background in electronics, coding and sensor technologies. Currently, I am undertaking my Masters of Philosophy at QUT as part of the BMW Group + QUT Design Academy Research Program. My research is focused on exploring Advances in Human-Robot Interactions for Manufacturing and Logistics Applications. I also work as a research assistant and design tutor at QUT, as well as a freelancer creating bespoke interactive designs in collaboration with artists and creatives. I have a passion for technology and want to explore ways to make the interactions and experiences with technology more natural and human-centred.
Researching in collaboration with one of the world's biggest automotive companies
At the time of writing this, I am still in the early days of my research but already I am so excited to get started on this exciting project with BMW Group + QUT Design Academy. It is truly an amazing opportunity to conduct research with real-world outcomes and applications that may one day help contribute to how humans and robots collaborate, not only in factory settings but also in public and private spaces. BMW Group is at the forefront of much of the work and development of Human-Robot Collaboration efforts and is looking to future with little hesitation. I hope that I can be a part of this journey forwards by contributing high-level research that explores the full potential of what could be possible in this field.
Choosing a career in Industrial Design
Choosing Industrial Design as my career path was a winding road. I started my bachelor's in 2015 at the age of 25, after studying psychology and working in several different jobs. One of the defining moments on my journey was working as a network manager for a company that handled repair and warranty claims for several electronics import and distribution clients within Australia. During this time, I saw the mass of junk electronics, terribly designed products that are sold throughout Australia. I witnessed how much annoyance, stress, energy, effort, and impact these have on people's lives on a daily basis. These experiences stuck with me and led me to question how we produce things and what it means to have integrity and quality within the design process. This is what led me to try and develop a career as a designer.
Parting thoughts
For anybody interested in a research career, I would encourage you to pursue the areas they are passionate about and approach all information with an open mind. My pathway here was a winding one, but it was always about following opportunities that resonated with me and fulfilled my desire and thirst for knowledge. I hope you are as excited about the BMW Group + QUT Design Academy as we are. I look forward to what's to come and sharing this experience with you all through blogs, newsletters and social media!
Best,
