BMW Vision Emergence: Designing the Future Supercar Interior - A Journey through Innovation, Challenges, and Triumphs in Industrial Design

For my industrial design capstone project, I was selected to undertake a brief from the QUT BMW academy, with the project centred around the exploration of a future supercar interior. My final design response to this was the BMW Vision Emergence, a 2035 bmw conceptual supercar designed to emphasise the neglected ingress and egress experience of Supercars whilst exploring future automotive technology.

This brief caught my attention primarily for its incorporation of the supercar. I have always admired the supercar as an artefact that embodies the functional aspects of engineering, the aesthetic aspects of design and the emotional qualities of art. The other major quality of this opportunity was an entrance into the BMW space and being able to design with the context of the badge and draw from its heritage, design language and automotive innovations.

Over the course of the project, I brought my ideas to a variety of people in order to get as much feedback as possible. Within studio sessions, Rafael Gomez provided me with exceptional feedback on the designs I brought to him whilst offering insight into inspiration and aspects of automotive design. Additionally, I had access to the members of the QUT BMW Academy, who all greatly assisted with further feedback and inspiration over the course of the project, but it was the Blender knowledge offered by the members that was indispensable in fully realising the Vision Emergence.

Over the course of the project, I experienced a diverse array of emotions. Throughout the start of the project, there was a lot of excitement about this opportunity and undertaking this project. Around the halfway point of the project, I had a lot of conflicts regarding how to approach the final design and make it as impactful as possible. The final parts of the project were quite stressful as I had been very ambitious with the scope of the final design, but it was extremely rewarding to see it all come together in the end.

Looking back on the experience, I see there were many positives and negatives. The major positive takeaway from this project was an introduction to Blender. I had always wanted to use Blender within a project but had not found it applicable to fully explore it until this project. Other positives of the project would have been expanding my design knowledge to another field and making new connections through the project. The negatives of the project mainly surround the amount of time required to learn Blender and the time constraints of the project as there were a lot of parts of the Vision Emergence I wanted to better flesh out but simply ran out of time for.

Overall undertaking this project has been immensely impactful and will be remembered for years to come. I look forward to further developing the ideas within the project to better realise the full purpose of the Vision Emergence.
